Popbot Duel Guide: Bot Differences, the 3-Second Bonus and Catch-Up Turns

Beating your own best score is fun, but a number puzzle gets truly tense when someone is playing against you. Popbot Duel in Number Pop lets you take on an AI right in your browser, no download needed. Here is everything you need to know about the rules, the three bots and how to actually win.

What is Popbot Duel?

You and Popbot take turns on a single 6×8 number board. Link three or more adjacent numbers in ascending order, such as 1 → 2 → 3, to pop them, and new numbers drop in from above. The first to reach the target score wins.

  • Targets: 400 (quick), 700 (relaxed) or 1500 points (long)
  • Scoring: 3 tiles = 30, 4 tiles = 50, 5 tiles = 80
  • Speed bonus: link within 3 seconds of your turn starting for +10
  • Catch-up turn: whoever falls more than 100 points behind scores double on their next turn (Popbot included)
  • Turn limit: 15, 10 or 8.5 seconds depending on the bot; if time runs out, the turn passes to Popbot with no score

Because you share one board, every pop changes which paths Popbot can use next. That is the biggest difference from the solo Score Challenge.

How do the three bots differ?

Bot Your turn Popbot's habit Miss chance Best for
Practice 15 s Mostly 3 tiles, sometimes 4+ 15% Learning the rules
Challenge 10 s Goes for 4+ tiles first 10% Most players
Expert 8.5 s Almost always the longest path 6% Fast-fingered experts

Popbot studies the board for one to five seconds before linking. Stronger bots think faster and miss less. The Practice bot also shuffles the board early when paths run low, so first-timers never get stuck.

In our simulations, an average player wins about nine games out of ten against the Practice bot, a bit more than half against the Challenge bot and roughly one in three against the Expert bot. Beating the Expert bot is worth bragging about.

Five tips for winning

1. Grab short paths for the 3-second bonus

If you see a 3-tile path as soon as your turn starts, take it. That is 30 points plus a 10-point speed bonus, 40 in total, which is close to the 50 you would get for spending five seconds hunting a 4-tile path. Save your thinking time for when a 5-tile path (80 points) is in sight.

2. Plan your next move while Popbot thinks

The board stays visible during Popbot's turn. Spot your next path while it thinks, and you can claim the speed bonus the moment your turn begins. Just double-check after Popbot's move, since falling tiles can change the board.

3. Behind? Go big on your catch-up turn

When you trail by more than 100 points, the bar below the board shows "Catch-up! Double points this turn." This is the time to find the longest path rather than the speed bonus. A doubled 5-tile link is worth 160 points, enough to flip the match.

4. Ahead? Watch out for Popbot's catch-up turn

Catch-up turns apply to Popbot too. If you lead by more than 100 points and Popbot lands a long path, it can close the gap in one move. When you are well ahead, keep scoring steadily and reach the target quickly instead of running out the clock looking for a perfect path.

5. Use the target to set the pace

400-point matches lean on luck, and one or two long links can decide them. 1500-point matches reward skill, but catch-up turns keep comebacks alive to the end. Try a new bot at 400 points first to get a feel for it.

FAQ

Does Popbot make mistakes? Yes. Depending on the bot, it fails to link 6 to 15% of the time, and the turn passes to you with no score.

Can I use hints? Duels offer unlimited hints, one hint per 100 points, or no hints.

What if no path is left? The board shuffles automatically without using up time or turns.
